Baldur’s Gate 3 Enters Early Access Later This Year
Baldur’s Gate 3 will be available via early access on Steam later this year. It’s been in development for a while – work was underway even before Divinity: Original Sin 2 shipped in September 2017 but the wait will soon be over as Wizard of the Coast’s parent company, Hasbro, has revealed Baldur’s Gate 3 will release later this year on Steam early access. The presentation was held at this year’s annual ToyFair event and discussed Hasbro’s current strategies in length, including Wizards of the Coast’s new plan for digital gaming dominance.
Right now the Dungeons and Dragons company plans to ship 7 RPGs from now until 2025, and the first will be Baldur’s Gate 3, followed by the new Dark Alliance action RPG. Wizards just acquired Montreal-based Tuque Games to make the Dark Alliance RPG, and formed Archetype, a new studio with ex-BioWare vets like James Ohlen, Drew Karpyshyn, and Chad Robertson.
During an event for the investors at the New York Toy Fair (via Bell of Lost Souls), Hasbro – parent company of Wizards of the Coast, who, in turn, are the owners of the Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur’s Gate licenses spoke about all that they have in the pipeline for D&D content in the coming few years. The company confirmed that they’d be releasing one D&D-based RPG every year up until 2025. More importantly though, they also stated that Baldur’s Gate 3 will be launching in early access later this year.
Larian’s previous game, the incredible Divinity: Original Sin 2, was also in early access for a whole year before its 1.0 launch, and gave players access to a chunk of the game’s story content. It proved to be a successful model for the game, and it’s not surprising that they are eyeing the same for Baldur’s Gate 3 as well. If they stick to that same timeline, that would mean that the game would be out some time in 2021- though that, of course, isn’t something that’s been officially confirmed in any capacity.
The World Gameplay Reveal of Baldur’s Gate 3 will be happening LIVE at PAX East on Thursday 27th February at 1530ET. Join Swen live on stage with a special guest, and if you can’t, we'll be streaming to YouTube so you can be involved no matter where you are in the world. pic.twitter.com/96bTNGNCqk

No Early Access launch date has been announced yet for Baldur’s Gate 3, but fans will get to at least see the game in action soon. Larian Studios recently announced that it will be showing the first gameplay of Baldur’s Gate 3 at PAX East on February 27, along with “a special guest.” The event will be livestreamed on YouTube for fans who can’t make it to the convention. Larian will be hosting a Q&A session at the same time, so a lot more details about Baldur’s Gate 3 could be revealed soon.
This news comes after Wizards of the Coast has opened and started staffing a new studio, Archetype Entertainment, composed in large part by Bioware Austin veterans. That studio is working on a sci-fi project, but there was no further news on that front. The presentation also mentioned that 2019 was a record year for Wizards of the Coast, partly on income from Magic the Gathering: Arena.
