Call Of Duty Modern Warfare Datamine Reveals Battle Royale

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare may have released without the battle royale feature that more or less defined Call of Duty: Black Ops at launch, but it looks like the large-scale, winner-take-all conflict might be returning after all. Call of Duty leaker Senscallo recently posted on reddit about the planned battle royale update for the shooter, and there’s some interesting stuff here for fans either of Call of Duty or for Battle Royale.

According to leaked images and info, this new mode is being co-developed by Infinity Ward and Raven, and is scheduled for a release early next year. By default the mode will involve 200 players and take place on a map that encompasses Modern Warfare’s Spec Ops, Ground War, and several other multiplayer maps (like Krovnik Farmland and Karst River Quarry).

That makes things interesting right off the bat potentially dropping into your favourite firefight arenas from above, then walking to the next after it’s been cleared out and looted. It’s also a potentially interesting recontextualization of Modern Warfare’s multiplayer maps, which are enclosed spaces with established paths through them.

For starters, the most important information here is that the mode is absolutely massive. Battle Royale has stuck at or near the idea of a 100-player match ever since PUBG established the format, but Modern Warfare is going to blow that up with a 200-player game mode complete with the usual options for solos, duos and squads.

Having found some of the map files, the ‘battle royale’ location is believed to have been identified as well as some of the key ‘points of interest’ on it. Digging a little deeper, however, the battle royale mode (based on the map and other information) is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious to date with a rumoured 200 players being able to participate in a single game.

Some of the key mode features have been listed as follows:

  • Player Count: 200
  • Playlists: Solo (1), Duos (2), and Squads (4)
  • End-Game Radar: On
  • Infiltration Option: C130
  • Pre-Game Lobby Free-for-All: On
  • Post-Game Exfiltration: Off
  • Max Health: 150
  • Last Stand Health: 100 / Revive Health: 30 / Timer: 60s / Revive Time: 7s
  • Friendly Fire Punish Limit: 2
  • Gulag: On

As ever with datamines and leaks like this, it bears pointing out that any or all of this is subject to change and parts of it may be completely inaccurate. Placeholder files and values often turn out to be dead ends or even misdirection from developers to throw eager players off the scent.

This new trend of game mode is certainly not loved by all. As I said earlier, however, this Call of Duty is (perhaps surprisingly) really striking a chord with the community. As such, as and when this arrives, we can see this game mode being hugely popular.

Will it be as good as the standard multiplayer modes? Who can say… I must admit though, as someone who isn’t a particularly huge fan of battle royale games, I am intrigued enough to probably give it more than a few goes.
