As with any Activision game, speculation runs rampant regarding the possible implementation of loot boxes or similar in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. No official word on the subject has been provided as yet, but that hasn’t stopped people from holding the game at arm’s length, expecting the worst. In an attempt to remedy this reputation, Infinity Ward’s art director Joel Emslie has taken to Reddit to alleviate the fears of fans. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare release on October 25 is coming up soon, and now one of the developers has clarified the game’s stance on loot boxes. In short, there are none.

Here’s the statement:

“Sigh. There continues to be misinformed and incorrect info being pushed about Modern Warfare. What I can say right now is that we are definitely NOT working on any kind of supply drop or loot box system. Also, functional stuff is unlocked through GAMEPLAY. Stay tuned, we’re planning to release info this week.”

Emslie’s statement is unequivocal as it relates to Infinity Ward the studio is not working on supply drops or loot boxes. So, it makes sense to assume Modern Warfare will not launch with loot boxes or supply drops. Emslie’s line, “functional stuff is unlocked through GAMEPLAY,” suggests Modern Warfare won’t have a pay-to-win element, either.

Infinity Ward says they are not working on them now, but that doesn’t mean they can’t do so later. Considering Blacks Ops 4 didn’t get loot boxes until four months after it first came out, Infinity Ward could be working on exactly the same schedule and their statement would still be perfectly true.

Loot boxes have created a lot of controversy, and governments around the world are examining the business practice to determine if they will take legal action. In August, it was announced that new games or game updates that add loot boxes on Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony platforms will be required to disclose the rarity rates of items.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare comes to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 25th.
