Conflicting reports are coming in that Destiny 2 PC users are being banned due to using overlays such as Fraps, Discord and hardware monitoring programs while running the game. Some users are even blaming Nvidia’s GeForce Experience overlay, despite Nvidia being an official partner with Bungie for Destiny 2.

Both the official forums and the Destiny subreddit are flooded with posts from users claiming they’ve been instantly banned for running overlays. “This is crazy,” says one user. “From what I can see I didn’t break the terms of service and also never knew about this overlay thing. It was never told to anyone. Just clicked play and got banned for having GeForce open because I updated my driver to the Destiny 2 one.”

Earlier this year Bungie warned Destiny 2 would block these types of applications for fear of apps inserting code into the game client. It means third-party voice communications and hardware monitoring (framerate and statistics overlays, for example) don’t work with Destiny 2.

Here’s a snippet of the reaction yesterday:

Bungie representatives have come out and vehemently denied the claims though, saying “We do block programs from pushing their code into our game. Most overlays work like that. We don’t ban for that tho. That’s internet BS.”

We were aware from the around the time Destiny 2 PC system requirements were announced that it wouldn’t play nice with certain third-party programs, with Bungie themselves admitting Destiny 2 would look to block these applications in order to prevent cheaters from utilising overlays to inject hacks.

To that end, Bungie has said third-party applications may prevent Destiny 2 from running but they shouldn’t result in a ban. “To help ensure that every player will have a fair shot at fun and glory in Destiny 2 on PC, we resist attempts by third-party applications to insert code into the game client,” explains Bungie. “This may result in incompatibility between Destiny 2 PC and the features of common third-party applications.”

That’s not a good enough for some Destiny 2 players, with user Kiinto saying “Thanks for finally acknowledging our posts but you’re wrong. I’ve been banned along with hundreds of other people dying to play your game for 14+ hours and this is how were treated? We demand to be helped.”

At the moment it’s really unclear just what is happening here. Literally hundreds of players are complaining they’ve been banned from Destiny 2 without even getting an opportunity to play the game, while Bungie says this just isn’t possible. We’ll be sure to keep you posted on how events shake out here.
