EA Confirms BioWare Anthem Will Release March 2019
EA CFO Blake Jorgensen has confirmed during a financial call with analysts that BioWare’s co-op MMO, Anthem, will be launching in March 2019.
Jorgensen said Anthem “will be shipped in the last quarter of the year and in the last month of that quarter”. Electronic Arts’ financial year runs from April through to March, so this is a roundabout way of confirming to investors that Anthem will be ready to ship in the last month of its financial year, committing Anthem to a March 2019 release date.
Anthem is set to release in Mass Effect’s traditional launch slot. (Mass Effect Andromeda came out in March 2017, Mass Effect 3 came out in March 2012.) EA and BioWare will be hoping Anthem doesn’t suffer the same fate as Andromeda, of course, which failed to set tills alight.
Interestingly, Jorgensen said EA was “being conservative” when it comes to Anthem’s potential success – for a few reasons. One, it’s a new intellectual property. Two, because Anthem comes out right at the end of EA’s financial year, the company will probably have limited restocking of the game, “even if it’s extremely successful”.
“We’re very excited about the game,” Jorgensen added. “It’s extremely unique, and I think players are going to really enjoy playing it, but we’re careful not to put too large of a forecast in there. And clearly, it will impact this year as well as next year as we not only continue to sell more into the next year but start rolling out the live services associated with that game.”
Something worth noting is that Anthem could be delayed depending on how development pans out. However, it would be interesting to see Anthem hits its target release window even in light of all the controversy surrounding the game.
Moreover, a week ago two topics popped up on Reddit that BioWare’s technical design director, Brenon Holmes, responded to, which tells us that content for Anthem at EA Play and E3 2018 is under “a lot of” work.
Anthem will supposedly resemble its original trailer moving forward in development without any compromises made.
So what does all of this mean? Well, it means that folks who attend EA Play will get to see Anthem content and those who attend E3 2018 will see even more of Anthem in action. Additionally, both showcases of the game will supposedly represent everything shown in the 2017 official teaser trailer.
Anthem is set to release sometime in March of 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
