Horror Game Maid Of Sker Release Date Revealed
Originally announced back in 2018, and given several different release dates since, the final release window for Wales Interactive‘s Maid of Sker has been confirmed as June 2020. Maid of Sker brings a dash of Welsh culture to the first-person survival horror genre, being loosely based on the Victorian novel of the same name and some real-life locations and events from the area. This one looks like it stands among the best in the field, from what we’ve seen so far, with the striking visuals and audio, as well as the unique art direction setting the stage for this to be a top-notch immersive horror experience.
Maid of Sker is a new horror game that will launch on PC, PS4, and Xbox One at some point in June, with a Nintendo Switch release planned for October. Maid of Sker is set in 1898, and it tasks players with exploring the eerie Hotel Sker. Players will have to avoid dangerous enemies all the while taking in a “chilling story” that has been inspired by Welsh folklore and British horror. Maid of Sker will also use re-imagined versions of Welsh hymns, which should go a long way in ensuring that the game is sufficiently unnerving.
As far as the story goes, Maid of Sker is written by the same people who wrote the horror games SOMA and Don’t Knock Twice. It’s primarily based on the folk-tale of Elisabeth Williams, who died of heartbreak in the 1800s.
Here are the key features of the game:
- 3D sound-based AI system as the core survival mechanic.
- A chilling story inspired by Welsh folklore fusing psychological, gothic and British horror.
- Realistic visuals featuring 4k uncapped on PC and enhancements on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.
- Re-imagining of famous Welsh hymns Calon Lân (A Pure Heart), Suo-Gân (Welsh Lullaby) and Ar Hyd Y Nos (All Through the Night) from the spine-chilling voice of Tia Kalmaru.
Upon revealing the game, Managing Director David Banner sai:
“We’re so excited to be announcing Maid of Sker. For us at Wales Interactive Maid of Sker is a fantastic chance to share some Welsh heritage with the rest of the gaming world and frighten them all at the same time!”
Maid of Sker also recreates several Welsh hymns like Calon Lân (A Pure Heart), Suo-Gân (Welsh Lullaby) and Ar Hyd Y Nos (All Through the Night), all sung by Tia Kalmaru who, like the studio, comes from Wales and is described as having a “bone-chilling” voice, as you can hear in the trailer. Players on Xbox One X and PS4 Pro will have access to 4K enhancements, while those on PC will get an uncapped 4K experience.
Maid of Sker launches June 2020 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Nintendo Switch release date in October.
