MechWarrior 5 Release Date Announced New Trailer & Gameplay
The release date for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries was announced at Mech-Con 2018 yesterday. Originally scheduled for 2018, it is now slated to release on September 10 of next year (2019). New released trailer Below.
Piranha Games showcased some brand new gameplay and announced the release date of MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries.
The game was played in Co-op with four players, under the leadership of Piranha Games President Russ Bullock himself, at the controls of a mighty Thunderbolt.
We get to see plenty of really awesome mech simulation action against ground forces, flying vehicles, and other mechs. There is also full-fledged destruction, with mechs literally smashing into buildings and tearing them down. Interestingly, we also see the ability to do repair and rearm at a specific location on the field, which appears to be very handy on a protracted mission with objectives that keep updating.
The game looks really awesome, definitely worthy of the legacy of the franchise. Check out a new gameplay below:
Now if you’re unfamiliar with the MechWarrior franchise, it debuted in 1989, and pretty much dropped into obscurity in 2002 after the release of MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries. Its namesake is the MechWarrior tabletop RPG, belonging to FASA’s glorious BattleTech IP. This name will probably sound more familiar among relative novices since Harebrained Schemes recently released its Battletech turn-based strategy game. MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is set in the same world, but as you have seen in the video, it places you in direct command of a simulated mech.
Piranha Games CEO, Russ Bullock said:
“To me that is the pinnacle of the game series, at least, it’s what I enjoyed the most. It’s what I believe peopled enjoyed the most. I think that always having the freedom to run your own mercenary unit and live out this live in the Battletech universe is something that we’ve dreamed about. For me that was the core, to give players the most freedom they’ve ever had in a MechWarrior game.”
That’s the beauty of the meta layer of progressions players experience a career that begins in the year 3015 and runs until 3049. That’s only so much time to complete the story, earn income from contracts and from selling salvage. At the end of every mission, components and weapons not completely destroyed from your enemies can be collected for use or for sale. And your own damaged mechs need time (could be in-game weeks) to repair. That gives you the choice of trying to complete a mission right away with that damaged mech or swapping in another from your inventory.
Piranha’s popular MechWarrior Online offers the PvP experience and is built off CryEngine 3, and MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries now adds the single-player story and co-op play but is built off of Unreal Engine 4.
As for multiplayer, MechWarrior 5 will have co-op. Bullock said that the team wanted to focus on the campaign and let PVP-minded players have MechWarrior Online. That means you can invite up to three friends to join you in your otherwise single-player missions in MechWarrior 5.
The goal of MW5 is to offer a free form experience where players can explore the Inner Sphere and take the contracts you want and elevate your mercenary unit to elite status. There are 50-60 chassis of mechs in the game, each with 3-5 variants, all of which can be customized in Battletech fashion, even down to the cosmetics.
MechWarrior 5 releases for PC on September 10. You can follow more news from Mech-Con 2018 over on Piranha Games Twitch channel where much of the event is being livestreamed this weekend.
