Resident Evil 2 Remake Players Found A Workaround To Get Timer Reset
Resident Evil 2‘s 1-shot demo was released yesterday on Steam, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and some clever Steam users have already found a way to bypass the 30 minute time limit in the demo. When Capcom announced the Resident Evil 2 demo was a “1-shot” with a 30-minute time limit, many complained about not having long enough to try the game out.
Somewhat hilariously, once you’ve used up your 30 minutes on one account, you can simply load the demo up on another account on your console and play all over again. You can do this as many times as you’re willing to create accounts across PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. PC players have come up with ways to reset the demo timer, but these involve tinkering with Steam itself, which you may not feel comfortable doing.
However, some Steam users have been able to find ways to reset or remove the timer for the demo entirely. To remove the timer entirely, one post points players towards a trainer (a special program that modifies a game’s data). In order to reset the timer you will have to delete a data00-1.bin file within your Steam user folder and disable cloud saving. However for some earning the achievements in-game will lock them out of replaying the demo, with numerous users in the comments saying it has or has not worked for them.
A video (below) detailing the data deletion to reset the timer adds the requirement to download a Steam achievement manager in order to bypass the achievement lockout reported in other comments. Using the manager you can uncheck achievements in Steam in order to reset the timer. The main downside to this method is that starting the game again will make you go through opening menu options as if you were setting it up for the first time but does give you unlimited resets to enjoy the demo without fear.
Although unlock unlimited time is exciting, keep in mind that the content of the demo is probably fairly limited. Players should not expect to find the contents of the full game waiting after they use the hack to remove the limit limit.
The goals of the demo can be completed very quickly if players know where they are going and one streamer already managed to beat the whole demo in three minutes.
With players able to give the “1-shot” demo more than one shot, the speedruns have already begun. There are multiple videos online showing players complete the thing in under three minutes. The fastest time I’ve seen so far is two minutes and 57 seconds (that run is in the video below), but I’m sure by the time the weekend is done, it’ll be down further.
Resident Evil 2’s launch is just a few short weeks away, so be sure to check back soon for updates, and news about the big release. Although remake’s can sometimes fly under the radar, the community seems to be very excited to dive headfirst into this one.
Resident Evil 2 is set to release on January 25, 2019, for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
