Riot Games Acquires Hytale Developer Hypixel Studios
Riot Games, the creators of League of Legends and now other games encompassing different genres, has acquired Hypixel Studios. The League developer announced this week that it’d welcomed the Hytale studio into its company and plans to support Hypixel Studios creation of the Minecraft like game throughout the development process.
Hypixel Studios, for those who aren’t familiar, is a very young studio. It was opened in 2018 self-funded, but quickly received millions in angel investment from parties including Riot Games. The studio’s founders were the well-regarded developers of Minecraft Hypixel server, best known for its popular game modes and mini-games. Hytale, Hypixel Studio’s first game, will be based on the concept behind the Hypixel Minecraft server. Like Minecraft, it’s a voxel based multiplayer game. While still a sandbox RPG, Hytale will focus more on structured gameplay rather than Minecraft freeform adventuring. Hytale is currently planned for release in 2021, though it may be in a beta or early access capacity.
We’re excited to welcome @Hypixel Studios to Riot Games. We look forward to supporting the @Hytale team during their development process and beyond. Learn more: https://t.co/PMk6RMRvSa pic.twitter.com/0XjW096TeT

Dylan Jadeja, president of Riot Games said:
“Over the last 18 months, we’ve been fortunate to advise Hypixel Studios as they build toward their vision for evolving a game genre that reaches an incredibly diverse range of players around the globe,”
“Now, as they prepare to enter the next chapter, we’re thrilled to take our partnership to the next level through this acquisition. We look forward to supporting Hypixel Studios’ journey through the development process, helping them grow, and learning from them as well.”
So there are good reasons to be nervous about a Riot acquisition, but Hypixel has attempted to put minds at ease with an FAQ that clarifies a few things. There’s still some degree of separation between Riot and Hypixel, for instance, and Hytale devs will continue to be Hypixel employees, not Riot employees. The studios will function independently from one another, too, so Riot devs won’t be working on Hytale and Hypixel devs won’t be jumping onto LoL.
Hypixel Studios will retain its current structure while also establishing a permanent office in Derry Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The new office will act as a base for back-office functions and quality assurance. Hypixel Studios is hiring 20 new positions in these areas, with further growth expected as the development of Hytale continues to progress.
