Sony PlayStation 2 Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary Today
Sony’s PlayStation 2 today celebrate its 20th birthday in Japan, as the console is now two decades old. The PlayStation 2 released on March 4, 2000 in Japan for 39,800 yen, around $369, on its launch date. It combined both CD-ROM and DVD-ROM formats, which allowed players to game and enjoy a DVD too. While the original PlayStation forever changed the landscape of the video game industry, the PlayStation 2 is the console that, arguably, put Sony in their position as that industry’s leader. Released in Japan on March 4th, 2000, the system had a paltry number of games at launch, but the console’s backwards compatibility and built-in DVD player made it an early hit. Over the system’s lifespan, however, that library would grow exponentially, offering classic games such as Grand Theft Auto 3, Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Kingdom Hearts. Sony has sold more than 155 million PS2 consoles worldwide, making it the best-selling system of all-time.
Looking at it in retrospect, we can say that PlayStation 2 has hit the target in full: with over 155 million units sold since launch, Sony’s second console is still unbeaten in the sector’s sales rankings, counting both fixed and portable consoles. To find the second home-console the best selling we have to get to our times: PlayStation 4, with about 109 million units sold, is a candidate to be the spiritual heir of PS2 in all respects, but it will be difficult to match the numbers before the end of its life cycle.
The console was produced until 2012, when Sony discontinued the system after over twelve years of life. Still, it received new games well into 2014, and had an active repair service in Japan until 2018. Additionally, over the consoles’ lifetime, it accumulated over 1,800 games from a variety of genres and franchises. Furthermore, players could also enjoy backwards compatibility, opening up the library to include original PlayStation titles.
On the PS2’s 20th Birthday, PlayStation Japan’s Twitter asked users what games made them fall in love with the system. PlayStation fans took to to Twitter with a variety of responses, including mentioning Final Fantasy X, Persona 4, Ratchet & CLank, and Metal Gear Solid 2.

Of course, with so many games released over the years, it’s interesting to see which titles fans remember fondly. It’s a pretty diverse group! Though the PlayStation 2’s time has come and gone, it still remains an impactful console in and outside of Japan.
