The Last Of Us 2 Actress Reveals Death Threats She Received

Laura Bailey, who voices the character Abby in The Last of Us Part II, took to her Twitter account on Friday evening to reveal some of the many death threats she has received as of late due to actions perpetrated by Abby in the PlayStation exclusive game.

She prefaced the screencaps by saying she tries to “only post positive stuff,” but lately, the amount of hatred and vitriol she has been getting had become “a little overwhelming.”

“Man. I try to only post positive stuff on here… but sometimes this just gets a little overwhelming. I blacked out some of the words cuz, ya know, spoilers. Side note. Thank you to all the people sending me positive messages to balance it out. It means more than I can say.”

Bailey also noted that she had blacked out certain parts of the messages to keep those who had not played the game yet from being spoiled. The majority of hate aimed at the 39-year-old appeared to be due to Abby being responsible for the death of a beloved character in the Naughty Dog-produced game.

“Side note. Thank you to all the people sending me positive messages to balance it out. It means more than I can say,” she continued, adding a red heart emoji.

Thankfully, many of Bailey’s fans, friends and associates came forward in the Twitter replies to comfort and support her. Several people pointed out that these enraged fans needed to learn to separate Bailey from Abby. After this tweet was posted, one of Bailey’s harassers also came forward and apologized to her publicly. In her final update, Bailey thanked everyone for reminding her that “good people far outweigh the bad.”

Although fans are allowed to express their dissatisfaction with a game, nothing justifies death threats or hatred for its creators. In fact, the violent messages often tend to delegitimize the criticism and discourse surrounding a game. Overall, angry fans need to learn to understand personal boundaries.

Unfortunately, this type of foul behaviour isn’t uncommon. Bailey isn’t the first person in the industry this has happened to, and she won’t be the last. It’s tragic, but at this point, not very surprising to see this type of devilry.

The Last of Us 2 is available now for the PlayStation 4
